The Dead Weather Performed Live From The Basement Yesterday
Tons of us geeked out to watch a live stream of The Dead Weather perform 5 songs off their upcoming record Horehound, which is out July 14th.
Someone was wonderful enough to get a quality rip of the show and have uploaded the songs to YouTube.
As Beck would say, "Please enjoy".
"Hang You From The Heavens"
"Treat Me Like Your Mother"
"Forever My Queen"
"Bone House"
"So Far From Your Weapon"
Make sure you check out The Dead Weather's YouTube channel as well.
I Fell Fast. I Fell Hard. Heypenny, I I'm In Love With You.
It hasn't even been a half hour yet since my ears were graced with such happy/glorious sounds and already I know that this is going to become a new obsession.
Presenting the new love of my life: Heypenny.

My beloved friend Dean just introduced me out of nowhere. I didn't know what I was getting myself into. But it was definitely love at first sight/listen.
These guys are a four-piece based in Nashville, TN. It would have been great if this band existed when I was going to Belmont so I had a local band to parade around loving (pun intended).
They had me at this video. I mean, killer jamz + robots = WIN EVERY FREAKING TIME. Am I right??
If you enjoyed "CopCar", you can download a demo of it here.
They also have this adorable video for their jam, "Parade":
"Parade" is also available as a free download. Be sure to click here if you liked it!
So yeah, they have a record out in the UK, which you can pick up a physical copy in their store. They plan on releasing their EP very soon. No release date set as of yet because they're cooking up some crazy-fun ideas on how to let people know of its release.
If you enjoyed yourself, you can find these precious boys all over the internets.

WHY DO I LIKE THIS SONG SO MUCH!?!?!
No really, it's so silly, but I think because it's so silly and I don't have to over analyze anything about it would be a good enough reason for liking it.
What the heck am I talking about?
The jam is from Brooklyn-based Das Racist (who, btw, aren't racist).
The song is called....
Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell
Yeah. Even admitting the name of the song makes me blush a bit.
The particular version that I am enjoying in particular (yes, there are actual multiple versions of this) is the remix done by Wallpaper.
You are going to hate yourself for loving this, I promise.
[Possibly] The Last Film David Carradine Ever Did... And It Starred Jimmy Gnecco
As somewhat of a superfan of Ours, I do what I can to keep tabs on what Jimmy Gnecco is up to in hopes of catching him again live. I swear to you, watching this guy sing so hard that he looks like he's about to snap in half in incredible.
Anyways, the day that the world got word about the death of David Carradine, Gnecco posted a blog mourning the loss of Carradine, which included photos of the two of them from their upcoming short film.
Short film?
Yes.
How Not To Host An Album Stream (or Why I Should Have Your New Media Job At A Major Record Label)

Monday I caught wind that the new A-Ha record had leaked and proceeded to tell my best friend (and world's biggest A-Ha fan) Ted, of the wonderfully tragic news (I still get a little bummed when something leaks).
Now today Norweigan papers are reporting that the leak did not come from a renegade journalist or someone from where the CDs are actually produced, BUT FROM UNIVERSAL NORWAY THEMSELVES!
Amazon's 50 Albums for $5 [June Edition]: How Much You Should AT LEAST Be Spending
Amazon MP3 just tweeted about their sweet monthly deal where they offer 50 albums for $5. I personally don't have $250 a month to spend on records to try out just from Amazon, so here's some records I've heard/I own that I enjoy to start off with. Don't worry, I made sure to rank them in order of "must haves" to "if you've got the extra $5 lying around".
So how much do I think you should be spending at the very least?
Rainy Day Rock Records
Question for you today, the internet: What do you rock on a rainy day?
It's pretty gross outside today. Not as bad as when it storms like crazy in Florida, but rain in NYC is never very fun at all.
There's nothing better than curling up with a good album when it's raining. These are some of my favorites to put on in a storm:
Having A Crush On Calvin Harris Is So Easy

Seriously. How precious is this young man??? He's BY FAR one of my favorite follows on Twitter. Kid just likes to randomly yell about things he loves/hates, has a great sense of humor, and *most importantly* seems to have a good handle on using all of these wonderous internet tools to interact with his fans. Actually, the most important thing is that he's VERY easy on the eyes, haha. JK JK!! (Not JK that he's cute, but JK that it's the most important thing about him)
But yeah, not really sure why his single that's doing INSANELY WELL in Europe isn't for sale in the US. Guess he's no longer a priority here?? Hmm??
No matter, I want you to hear it and I don't think you should have to be patient for Columbia to get their act together. Right now the only option for US fans is buying an physical import on Amazon and it doesn't even have all the sweet remixes included below!

Calvin Harris - "I'm Not Alone" (Promo CD)
Tracklisting:
- "I'm Not Alone (Radio Edit)"
- "I'm Not Alone (Extended Mix)"
- "I'm Not Alone (Herves See You At The Festival Remix)"
- "I'm Not Alone (Burns Rework)"
- "I'm Not Alone (Tiesto Remix)"
- "I'm Not Alone (Instrumental)"
- "I'm Not Alone (Herves See You At The Parade Remix)"
If you like this PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASSSEEEEE go check out the Calvin Harris Merch Store and buy something!!!! Precious boy only gets to keep doing this for a living if you join in me in supporting him financially.
Kevin Devine Tonight At Music Hall of Williamsburg!!

This has been a long time coming. My bffl Ellena has been telling me about her friend Kevin Devine for YEARS and I have yet to meet the guy. I was even at his show at Bowery Ballroom but for some reason was SO exhasuted at that show that I couldn't function and had to leave before his set was over.
BUT NOT TONIGHT!! NO WAY BUDDY!!!
I hear we're going out to dinner with him first and then wandering over to watch him rock out at Music Hall of Williamsburg, but plans change within a drop of a hat all the time.
Regardless, I am STOKED to finally properly meet this guy and rock out to his jams. I have thoroughly enjoying his new record, Brothers Blood. Do you have it yet? You totes should have it!!
His Daytrotter session is pretty dang good, too! You can check that out here:
Ok So Maybe I'm Getting Old, Only Made It To One Show
Apparently the disco nap didn't help me one bit because I only made it out to James Yuill on Friday night.
After being completely zonked from staying out so late at Diggnation, I got up and freshened up to go trudge through the rain to catch James Yuill at The Annex.
I arrived a little late. Audience was a bit scarce. It was like little pockets of couples dotted on the main floor. But no worries as it was only a matter of minutes before I was quickly scooped up by what appeared to be the only other fan at the show. Her name was Colleen. She had brought along her husband and best friend from college with newlywed husband in tow. As soon as she saw me standing alone but knowing the words to the songs, she immediately enouraged me to move up front with her and was dancing it up as close to James as she could get.
His set was great! I gotta say, listening to this guy on recording does NOT do him justice whatsoever. I know the PA at The Annex is a bit loud to begin with, but the programming that this guy blends with acoustic guitar is NOT as quiet as it sounds on the record. I happily bobbed my head around and swayed with Colleen in the front the whole time. After a quick text chat with Drew to confirm we were both too zonked to hit up Amanda Blank, that left me with Colleen and her crew, who were INCREDIBLY sweet people. When I told them that a friend had sent me the record but I didn't have enough cash to grab it to be supportive at the show, Colleen's best friend disappeared for a few minutes only to return with a copy of the record signed for me by James. What's funny is the whole time they thought my name was "Kimmy" so James signed the record to "Kimmy". lolz. Oh well. After making sure Colleen had plenty of time to be "normal fan" and not "unfortunately too well versed in the music biz fan", I wandered over to James to ask how tour had been going, etc. We were cut a bit short because his sound guy wanted to go load out, but I received an INCREDIBLY polite DM from him on Twitter apologizing for having to cut me short.
Artists: see how that works? I know it's harder the bigger you get, but if you start out this way... DANG! It's that little bit of extra work that makes you stand out to people in a BIG way.
If I wasn't officially a fan before the show, I DEFINITELY am one now.
If I still haven't sold you on him, check out his video for his incredibly adorable little jam called "This Sweet Love":
James Yuill on:
Rock Show Hopping Tonight: James Yuill @ The Annex + Amanda Blank @ Le Poisson Rouge

My friend Vin turned me on to James Yuill at the Passion Pit show on a boat. Honestly haven't given the record enough listens to be a proper fan, but dude is here from the UK and I doubt if I haven't shut it off yet that I'll hate him live. Takin' a chance on this one, but Vin has never led me astray before, so we'll see.
That show is at 9pm at The Annex. Figure I'll stick around for a bit and chat up James to see how the tour has been everywhere else. I heard no one was really at his show last night at Music Hall of Williamsburg (I was at the Diggnation thing at Webster Hall) so a drink for the guy may be in order.

Then at 11 I'll head over to Le Poisson Rouge to check out Amanda Blank. Won tickets to this show via The Music Slut. Only heard one song of hers but that hasn't stopped me before (aka Dead Weather, etc.). Drew has enjoyed singing her single around the apartment with me, so he's my +1. Yay for roomie hangouts!!
Not sure how I'm going to pull this off considering how exhausted I am. A disco nap is definitely in order pre-shows.
Another Day, Another Beck Guitarist With A Band Of Their Own That I Love
First I fell for Beck's guitarist/dinner table percussionist Matt Mahaffey and became obsessed with his bands sElf and Wired All Wrong. It's been a good ride so far. I've slowly been collecting every single sElf record and learning more about the recordings, the subculture of his fans, etc.
Just a half hour ago or so my buddy Jamo introduced me to Deep Sea Diver, which is the product of ANOTHER musician who has played guitar for Beck on tour: Jessica Dobson. I remember thinking to myself when I caught Beck at United Palace Theater for the Modern Guilt tour that it was a shame that Matt wasn't playing but kinda neat that they had this girl playing guitar and she was REALLY good! I mean, you sort of have to be good to play for Beck. The man is talented but PICKY!
Anyways, So Deep Sea Diver just released an EP recently called New Caves. You can order a physical copy here if Amazon DRM-free MP3s aren't your thing. 5 out of the 6 songs on the EP are up on the Deep Sea Diver MySpace. Definitely going to be a record that I will be rocking a lot this summer. My favorite song so far is definitely "Hangin' On".
Here's a video of "Confidence", complete with toy owl backup signer:

So friends, do we like?
Fischerspooner - "We Are Electric" video
Seriously, this band can do no wrong in my eyes. I was just listening to this record on the train this morning and thought back to the show a few weeks ago. Such an incredible show.
Oh, I don't think I ever linked to Chris' photos from the show. Check those out on his Flickr.
Mr. Hudson "There Will Be Tears"
I know I'm totally late on this song, but I keep finding myself going back to it over and over again. So good. If this is what Kanye wanted to do to him for the rest of the record, I wouldn't mind it that much, I suppose. Kid just has such a sweet quality to him that I don't think you have to autotune or anything. Just mic him good and let him do his thang, you know?
Video is kind of trippy + you get to see how incredibly precious he is.
I think I have a crush on him now....
